There were emotional scenes in Inverness last night as about 100 cars cruised through the city in memory of a 15-year-old boy who died after a battle with leukaemia.
Dylan Kay’s heartbroken family watched on as the motorcade made its way through the city in honour of the Culloden Academy pupil, who had a love for fast cars.
The teenager fought his illness for eight years but eventually contracted sepsis, which resulted in his life support being turned off with his family by his side.
Dylan’s funeral had been held earlier yesterday at William T Fraser and Son.
A drive past was originally planned to be held before the service, however due to the huge response to an online appeal and the large number of cars expected, the memorial procession was rescheduled to start at 6pm from the Tesco car park at Holm.
From there, scores of vehicles made their way along the southern distributor road past Asda, before turning left past Dows bar, heading through Hilton and on to Torvean Cemetery.
One onlooker said: “I must have seen probably 70 to 80 cars and there were many more arriving.
“When they came around to Dows they kept coming for about 20 minutes. There were a fair few Subarus, some Jaguars and things like that, but also some regular cars with people just turning up to show their respects.
“Dylan’s father Peter went and stood at the side of the road as the cars came round and he was quite emotional.”
Steph Jarvis, a participant in the procession, posted online afterwards: “What a great turnout. RIP young man. Proud to be part of this cruise tonight.”
Dylan’s brother-in-law, Alex Fraser, had appealed for motorists to take part on social media, saying: “He loved fast cars, so in honour of him we are wanting a line-up of as many as possible to go and give it some noise.
“This would mean a great deal to his family so I’m asking anyone available to help out.
“The family are absolutely heartbroken. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew and friend.
“Dylan was one of the nicest, bravest and strongest boys I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.”
Dylan died last Saturday, April 29.
