Police in Inverness have issued a warning about a spate of suspected bogus workmen operating in the city.
Highland capital area commander Chief Inspector Ian Graham said that the force have received a number of calls about cold callers trying to secure work and asking for money.
One case saw a man in his late 80s forced to turn away two men who had climbed onto his roof without his permission and then demanded money for work carried out.
The suspected con-men had used a ladder to get onto to the roof of the Culduthel Road property.
They were travelling in an umarked white van and did not produce any identification, though they claimed to be from a local firm.
A neighbour was concerned about their activity and filmed them while they were on the roof and then called the police, who spoke to the men before they were able to leave after being denied payment.
The man, who is in late 80s and did not want to be named, said: “They asked for £160 and I just told them no way.
“I didn’t even realise that they were up there.
“I just hope that it stops them taking money from some poor old soul somewhere else.”
Ch Insp Ian Graham said: “We have received a number of calls recently concerning reports of possible bogus workmen trying to secure work and asking for money.
“Trading Standards are aware of these incidents and I would like to take this opportunity to ask the public to remain vigilant to bogus callers and to ensure vulnerable family and neighbours are looked after.
“If a cold caller attends at your door, do not feel pressured into making immediate decisions. Take your time to check credentials to satisfy yourself that they are a legitimate business and do not hand over cash.
“Anyone with concerns should contact Police Scotland on 999 in an emergency or 101.
“Additionally you can call Trading Standards.”
