Some of the brightest young brains in the Highlands have turned their skills to the world of robotics.
More than 150 pupils built their own “Mindstorm” robots out of Lego – before taking on different schools in the north’s answer to Robot Wars.
The mini machines are built form Lego and are then programmed and controlled using a tablet.
Auldearn, Merkinch, Balloch, Hilton, Cannich and Bridgend primary schools took part, receiving guidance from computing experts from Inverness College UHI.
Graeme Martindale, computing lecturer at Inverness College UHI, said: “The project was awarded funding last year to help local children establish a great set of digital skills early on.
“It’s been a huge success. The teachers and pupils were really positive and engaged, with many participants now showing a real interest in technology, and are keen to continue programming.
“The Mindstorm robots offered an excellent opportunity to combine different elements of the curriculum, including communication, team work and problem solving, with engineering and programming.”
Three of the schools have since adopted the idea for the longer term by setting up a programming club.
Competing schools have also been gifted a complete Mindstorm robot and tablet.
