There is growing support among city councillors for a proposal to allow the first alcohol licence in Inverness’s Victorian Market.
Labour member Bet McAllister, new deputy provost, backed the idea during a debate yesterday on a blueprint aimed at injecting new life into the retail complex.
She suggested the introduction of a drinks licence for the tourist season and special events.
Proposals for revamped entrances and extended trading hours were unanimously approved by the committee.
And a £40,000 a year “market manager” role will be created to oversee the upgrade.
City manager David Haas was confident that longer hours would help boost footfall.
Opening hours from 6pm to 7pm and 10am-4pm on Sundays will be trialled for the summer months.
The B-listed shopping centre is owned by the Inverness Common Good Fund and managed by the council.
