Highland Council has paid a temporary IT chief three times the going rate for the job, it emerged yesterday.
It recruited externally for the vacant post to oversee the transition of a new money-saving IT contract.
The staff salary for the position had been £77,500.
The agency person has, however, been paid £115,203 including expenses for – so far – doing the job for just six months.
Opposition SNP group leader Maxine Smith revealed the figures to yesterday’s full council meeting after making her own inquiries.
The temporary “head of digital transformation” replaced a staff member who left for a job at another council last December. The contracted worker is still in the role.
Councillor Smith said: “It should be looked at. We’re wasting public money.”
Budget leader Alister Mackinnon thanked her for raising the issue and promised to make his own inquiries into the matter and get back to her with a response.
