Inverness Library was evacuated yesterday after rubble fell through the ceiling and landed close to the public area.
The incident occurred at about 3.30pm and the library in the Farraline Park area of the city has since been closed to the public.
A spokesman for High Life Highland said: “In the interests of customer and staff safety a decision has been taken to close Inverness Library while investigations are commenced following a piece of rubble falling through the ceiling and landing at the edge of a public area.
“No-one was injured but as a precaution customers and staff were evacuated from the building.
“Maintenance staff from the Highland Council are on site and will carry out a full inspection after which the re-opening of the library will be reviewed.”
Library users are advised to monitor High Life Highland’s website and social media accounts for updates.
Last year, part of library was cordoned off because water was seeping through the roof, causing seven tiles to fall away and a bucket placed on the carpet.
The building was built as the Bell’s Institution school in 1841, but it ceased to be an education facility in 1937, thereafter functioning as a courthouse, police station and theatre before becoming a public library in 1980.
