Motorists and residents in the Bught district of Inverness are facing four months of disruption – just weeks after roads returned to normal following the opening of the West Link bypass.
Gas distribution company SGN will be starting work to upgrade the local gas supply network in the area.
The company is investing £308,000 to provide more capacity to meet the gas demand.
The project will start on Monday, April 30, and will last for around 17 weeks.
Engineering manager Alex Torrance said: “We’ve worked closely with the local authority in planning this work and we will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential project.
“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, however, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years and will provide more capacity to help meet an increased gas demand in the area.
“This means that when the work is complete, Inverness residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.”
The first phase of the work will be in Bught Road where it meets Ness Walk.
This will last for approximately 12 weeks and will progress southward around the boundary of Bught Park, alongside Bught Road.
Engineers will then move west along the park boundary, parallel to Bught Drive, up to its junction with Bught Lane. During the final stage of phase one, work will progress southward along Bught Lane up to Inverness Leisure Centre car park.
The second phase will begin on August 21 and last for approximately five weeks.
The work will begin in Ness Walk, next to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint, and progress southward up to the entrance of Bught Park.
To ensure the safety of engineers and motorists, Ness Walk will be temporarily closed between its junctions with Ballifeary Lane and Bught Road.
Access for residents and pedestrians will be maintained at all times and a signed diversion will be in place for motorists.
