A 59-year-old fencer from Inverness has returned home with a silver medal after beating off tough competition at the British veterans fencing championships.
Hugh Kernohan, a former senior British epee champion, clinched two close fights against Paul Donnelly and Peter Eames on the last hit, placing him in the semi-finals against Michael Thomas during the Manchester event.
Mr Kernohan went on to win the penultimate round, defeating his opponent with a 10-3 victory.
In the final round against left-hander Chris Heaps, Mr Kernohan struggled to get his distance right and was unable to score any points, finishing in second place overall.
