The victim was walking home with his bicycle at about 11pm when he was approached by a man described as being in his late teens or early 20s and wearing dark clothing.
In the subsequent attack the victim – who was in his 50s – sustained head injuries that and needed treatment at the city’s Raigmore Hospital.
Officers are calling on members of the public who were in the area on Friday night to get in contact, including dog walkers and taxi drivers with any dashcam footage.
Detective Sergeant Michael Cosh said: “A man in his 50s was walking home with his bicycle on Balnakyle Road when he was approached by another man, described as late teens to early 20s, 5ft 7in, thin build with dark hair combed to one side. This unidentified man was wearing a dark top and dark jeans.
“We are asking that anyone who was in the area at the time, including dog walkers or taxi drivers who may have dashcam footage, who think they may have seen either of the men involved contact Police Scotland on 101.”
