A teenager held up a Samurai sword in the University of the Highlands and Islands Inverness campus and made threatening remarks.
But John Mitchell’s comments concerned his fellow students, and a member of staff was called to confiscate the weapon and alert the police.
The 19-year-old of Orchard Court, Kingussie, is now suspended from his construction course and Inverness Sheriff Court heard it is unclear whether he will be allowed to resume it.
Mitchell appeared before Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood for sentence after earlier admitting behaving in a disorderly manner while possessing a sword and alarming people.
The court was told that police who arrested Mitchell accepted that his comments were made in jest. Fiscal depute Fiona Murray said: “They believed it was a massive error of judgement. He told officers he did it as a joke and there was no excuse for it.”
Defence solicitor Willie Young said: “The background report on him says he can be impulsive at times. He bought the sword for £30 in a local shop and accepts that his actions were immature. He did not intend any malice.”
Mitchell was fined £370.
