Vessels are being told to keep out of the the area between Clava Island and Hoy in Scapa Flow after a suspected unexploded wartime torpedo was discovered on the seabed during an underwater survey.
It’s an area popular with dive charter vessels and HM Coastguard has issued warnings to people to keep away while they monitor the situation.
The military Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team is currently making its way to Orkney from Faslane and expected to arrive at the scene at around 4pm today to carry out an assessment and make it safe.
Kaimes Beasley, duty controller for HM Coastguard said: “With weather in the area likely to be good today, it is more than possible that dive charter boats will want to go there, but our strong advice is to keep away.”
