The Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness has received two prizes for the cleanliness of its toilets at the national Loo of the Year awards.
The north shopping centre scooped the prize at the ‘Washroom Oscars’ for the Individual Washroom Cleaner of the Year award as well as the Space to Change national award for Scotland.
The awards have recognised the best washrooms in Britain since 1987 enforcing one simple objective – to encourage the highest possible standards in all ‘away from home’ washrooms.
Inspectors of the Loo of the Year Awards visited the centre unexpectedly before judging the cleanliness of the facilities against 101 judging criteria, including signage and décor, fixtures and fittings and overall standards of cleanliness and management.
The prize for the Space to Change category was awarded to the centres The Lachie Smith Room, which recently underwent extensive renovation in 2018 thanks to a £5,000 grant from the Inverness Common Good Fund to Shopmobility, which was matched by the Eastgate.
The facility is the only of its kind in the city and is only accessible by radar key where the room features a hoist to enable easy movement for those with mobility issues.
Jan Bell, cleaning supervisor at Eastgate, scooped the prize for Washroom Cleaner of the Year, stating she was “honoured” before adding: “There is a team of 14 dedicated cleaning staff all working diligently to achieve this national recognition so it is a team effort and a team award.”
