A Highland ex-serviceman who has dedicated his life to the Royal British Legion has been recognised for his commitment in the Queen’s birthday honours.
Frank “Donnie” Dayman, chairman of the Glen Urquhart branch, said he was “delighted” to be awarded a British Empire Medal for a job he considers himself “very privileged” to have.
The 83-year-old joined the legion in the 1960s after moving to the Highlands from London after completing his National Service.
Over the past 50 years he has made his way up the ranks, starting off as assistant sports convener to the top position he holds today.
He took a break in 1996 after suffering a heart attack.
But the legion was keen to have him back as soon as he was fit and healthy.
From visiting people in hospital and organising sporting events across the country to even organising the legion’s Christmas parties, Mr Dayman said he had tried his hand at everything.
“I do this for all the men who lost their lives for us – if they hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t be here,” he said.
“I just try to do my bit.
“When I received my letter to accept my award, I had to read it twice for it to sink it.
“It is a great honour to be awarded for a job I consider myself very privileged to have.”
