A man was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital with serious injuries after a two car crash on the A9 last night.
Another casualty was also taken there by ambulance after the accident.
It happened at Skiach, between Alness and Evanton, at 7.25pm, with one of the men having to be cut free by firefighters.
He was secured to a spinal board and taken on to the air ambulance by paramedics.
Four fire crews were deployed, two from Invergordon fire station, and one each from Dingwall and Inverness.
Police closed the road in both directions for several hours, with local diversions in place.
The crash happened at the access road to Skiach, which has been the scene of several road accidents in the past few years.
Last night’s incident involved a silver Vauxhall Estate, which was badly damaged, while the front of the other vehicle, a black Mitsubishi Outlander, had taken most of the impact.
One witness said: “Both cars appeared to contain several items of luggage, and it looked as if the Vauxhall had been cut open to free the injured man.”
