A student was killed and his three friends injured in a horrific crash on a Highland road.
The young man, who was in his early 20s, died at the scene of the accident on the A87 Kyle to Invergarry road.
It was the second serious accident on the A87 within 24 hours and calls have been made for improvements to be made to busy tourist routes in the Highlands.
The four students are understood to have been travelling from Skye to Glasgow on Saturday evening after a holiday.
The victim, who has not been named by police, was a front seat passenger in a Nissan Micra.
A woman travelling in the rear seat suffered a fractured skull and arm and was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance.
She was understood to be in a stable condition last night.
The other men in the car, including the driver, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Belford Hospital, Fort William.
It was the only vehicle involved in the crash and last night it was unclear what had happened.
Officers have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 101.
They said that the accident occurred five miles south of the Bun Loyne junction between the A87 and the A887 road to Invermoriston.
The stretch of road in question is undulating and involves a number of bends.
Yesterday the only evidence of a smash was a small pile of metal debris on the verge.
The route was closed for nearly seven hours on Saturday to allow police to carry out their investigations.
Five fire appliances were initially called out to the crash, which happened at 5.30pm.
They included two units from Fort William, and one each from Spean Bridge and Fort Augustus. The heavy rescue unit from Inverness also set out to the scene.
However the Inverness crew and one of Fort William units were turned back.
The fire service said that their crews released an injured woman from the wreckage of the vehicle using cutting gear.
A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters stabilised the vehicle and used cutting equipment and spreaders to remove one casualty, who was airlifted to Raigmore with serious injuries.
“The remaining two casualties, who were treated by paramedics at the scene, were then transferred by ambulance to the Belford Hospital in Fort William.
“One appliance from Fort Augustus was called to the scene along with another from Fort William and third from Spean Bridge. The last crew left the scene at 7.11pm.”
Police refused to give details of the victim last night, stating that they were trying to contact next of kin.
Last night, councillor Margaret Davidson, Aird and Loch Ness, called for more improvements to tourist routes in the west Highlands.
She said that the accident was tragic but she added: “All these routes – the A87 and the A82 – get so busy in the summer.
“It’s great to have so many visitors but I think we need to reflect on what we need to do to make the road safer.
“But there is no prospect of substantial improvement. All the money seems to go to the central belt or the A9.
Mrs Davidson said: “For years, I have been suggesting more laybys on the A82 to allow people to pull in and let queues clear.
“We need major investment on these routes.”
On Friday evening, a woman was flown to Raigmore Hospital after a minibus overturned near the Cluanie Inn.
The road was closed for three hours after the accident at 4.30pm.
