Among the visitors to Nairn Highland Games at the weekend were a wedding party from Ireland and an ex-pat from Australia who staged a meet-and-greet.
Nine pipe bands, Highland dancers and games contestants all provided the traditional element to the popular event which once again attracted a good turn-out.
Lorna Helby – nee Cameron – a one-time Nairn resident set up a stall at Saturday’s event so she could reacquaint herself with old friends and, by all accounts, had a successful time.
Another stall holder attracting many interested visitors, from near and far, was Donald Wilson, who along with fellow-authors Graeme Macleod and Bill Logan has written a book on the history of Nairn County FC.
A hard working committee, led by chieftain Lord Cawdor, and an army of dedicated volunteers, worked for many months to ensure everything went smoothly.
Treasurer Gordon Forbes said: “We had slightly less that last year, but that had been during a spell of exceptional weather, but nevertheless we were delighted with the turn-out.
“Everything went so well I was back home for 6pm, as soon as the last tug-of-war had ended, which indicates it all went smoothly.
“There were many highlights throughout the day, in particular meeting visitors from all over the world, especially at the parade.
“There were people from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA, all holding their national flags, and doing it with pride.
“Another nice moment was watching the different British Legion representatives – I think there were nine different legions from all over Scotland – especially with the World War I commemorations.
“We also welcomed a wedding party, which had celebrated the marriage of a former Nairn man and his bride from Ireland, where is where most of their 20 guests came from.
“They had been at the couple’s wedding the day before at the Golf View Hotel, so we managed to get them all seated together and they had a great time.”
Mr Forbes added: “We have athletes and judges who come here every year, and are always full of praise and say they enjoy coming to Nairn.
“On behalf of the committee we look forward to welcoming them all next year.”
