Inverness flood work resumes

Work on the Inverness flood scheme was late and over budget.
Work on the Inverness flood scheme was late and over budget.

Flood alleviation work in Inverness which was temporarily halted during the summer tourist season will resume next week.

This will result in a section of Bank Street, between Fraser Street and Friars Street, from Monday, being again closed to through-traffic, until November 28.

Work on the ongoing project will be carried out up until this date, before the road is re-opened in advance of the busy festive shopping period.

The £9.3million scheme to construct flood defences along both banks of the River Ness began in September last year, leading to the initial closure at Bank Street.

Meanwhile, access to Fraser Street will be restricted to residences and businesses, as well as buses, taxis, emergency vehicles, and refuse collection lorries.

A spokeswoman for Highland Council said: “Bank Street was re-opened to traffic for July and August to accommodate the busier summer months during the River Ness Flood Scheme works.

“In order to further progress the flood alleviation works it is necessary to re-close Bank Street to through-traffic so that drainage, wall and streetscape works can continue.

“As always, businesses remain open as usual and pedestrian diversions will be clearly identified. Bank Street will re-open at the end of November 2014 for the run up to Christmas.”

Meanwhile, Fraser Street will also be restricted to those accessing residences and businesses, as well as buses, taxis, emergency vehicles, and refuse collection lorries.
