The leader of the Better Campaign has praised the “success story” of Inverness harbour during a visit to the north.
Alistair Darling spoke yesterday during a visit to the Highlands with Ross, Skye and Lochaber MP Charles Kennedy.
The pair were shown around by harbour master Ken McLean and north MSP David Stewart.
Mr Darling said major ports such as Inverness had benefited from being part of the UK.
He said: “This is a harbour which has done extraordinarily well over the last few years, it in many ways symbolises the economic activity going on, not just in Inverness but in the Highlands generally.
“Our essential message is that these are businesses, jobs, firms that depend on us being part of the United Kingdom.
“In the Scottish Government’s white paper ports like this are not mentioned once, despite the fact that it’s such an important part of what Scotland’s all about.”
Mr Kennedy agreed, saying: “There are things we are doing better in Scotland while we are together.”
The campaigners also visited a sheltered housing block at Argyle Court in the Crown area of Inverness.
Resident Mary Cameron, 84, spoke at length to the two politicians but said she was still an undecided voter.
She said: “It was nice to speak to them but I’m still undecided about voting.
“I’m not sure that I want things to change that much.”
