A 41-year-old lorry driver has died following a crash on the A9.
He was killed in the incident on the A9 trunk road at Berriedale Braes at around 11.20pm on Thursday.
The road was closed in both directions.
Ballot boxes from the referendum count in Caithness were rerouted on the way to Dingwall as a result of the closures.
A police spokeswoman said: “At about 11.18pm, Police Scotland received a report of a serious one vehicle road traffic collision on the A9 near an area known locally as the Berridale Braes, involving a heavy goods vehicle.
“Sadly, as a result of the collision, police can confirm that a 41-year-old man who was driving the vehicle has died. His next of Kin have been informed of the matter.
“The man’s identity has not been confirmed by the police at this time.
“The road was closed as a result of the collision and has subsequently been opened to one lane with traffic lights in place. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
