History was made at the Inverness Mod yesterday when a sister and brother achieved a family double and took top prizes in the junior solo singing.
Catriona Bain, 15, won An Comunn Gaidhealach’s silver medal in solo singing (aged 13-15), while her 13-year-old brother John Alasdair proved he would not be bested by taking the equivalent in the boys’ competition.
Senior Mod officials said they believed the accolades – the highest in junior singing – had never been won by youngsters in the same family before.
After news of the historic double was broken to proud father Jack, from Gress in Lewis, by the Press and Journal, he said: “I can hardly believe it. They work hard at their Gaelic.
“I am from Orkney, and have only a smattering of Gaelic.”
Stunned mother Chriselle, who lectures in Gaelic at Western Isles College UHI in Stornoway, said: “They are both fluent speakers but I was totally stunned to hear they had both won their competitions.”
