An Inverness man punched a teammate on the nose for letting a goal in during a friendly match, Dingwall Sheriff Court heard yesterday.
Brian Shewan, 46, from 19 Muirfield Gardens, Inverness, admitted assaulting David Barron during a game at the Highland Football Academy at Dingwall’s Victoria Park.
Sheriff James Scott ordered that Shewan pay £200 compensation to Mr Barron within 28 days.
The pair were playing in the same team during the match on February 2 this year, but Shewan blamed goalkeeper Mr Barron for failing to save a shot.
There was a verbal confrontation and Shewan lashed out.
Mr Barron was then taken to the A&E at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness where he received treatment for his injury.
Shewan’s solicitor, Aileen Macinnes, said he made attempts to apologise to his teammate who he had known for years and sent him several apologetic text messages.
She added: “Mr Shewan recalls being pushed at the time but thereafter accepts that he was anticipating something that was not about to happen by striking the victim.”
