Lack of investment is stunting Inverness Airport’s growth, according to a Highland MP.
Danny Alexander says it is vital that the airport is upgraded to keep pace with increased passenger numbers, and the introduction of new routes.
His comments came days after it emerged that Glasgow Prestwick Airport is to get £10million, on top of £7million it received in June.
Mr Alexander has written to deputy first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, urging the SNP government to release funds for Inverness Airport.
He said: “We have to ensure that the airport can keep up with demand as too often at peak times the terminal building, and its car parks, are overcrowded.
“There is standing room only in the terminal at busy times. The airport has put several proposals for investment forward over the years, and that funding is needed now.
“Only with continued investment can Inverness continue to be a key growth point for the Highland economy and cater for passengers who fly from the north.”
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “We will respond to the points raised in Mr Alexander’s letter in due course.
“The Scottish Government is committed to supporting the development of Inverness Airport through our funding of Highlands and Islands Airports Limited.
“Recent major infrastructure investment at Inverness has included £1.4million to upgrade the runway and a further £961,000 on a taxiway extension to allow for future expansion of the Inverness Airport Business Park development site.”
