Around 200 people trudged round a Highland farm yesterday raising funds for a three-year-old leukaemia patient by going nowhere.
The community of Nairn has rallied round the family of Martha Main McCruden after the youngster’s diagnosis which requires her to be away from her dad and sister.
Several fundraising events have been held in the town, with the Welly Walk being so well-supported that organisers had to make it all-ticket.
It turned out to be as successful as anyone could have wished for, with the proceeds, of more than £3,000, being split equally between Martha and Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow.
Rebecca Ledger, one of the team behind the event, said: “It was a brilliant day, a great turn-out and everything went smoothly.
“Young Martha is on the long road to recovery and her mum Dawn has been with her at Yorkhilll since she was diagnosed in August.
“It has meant the family has been separated as dad John, who also runs a restaurant in Forres, is looking after Martha’s one-year-old sister Millie, remains at home.
“A lot of people that took part in the Welly Walk do not even know the family, but have heard about the enforced separation and came along to support them.
“Martha needs so much specialist equipment, such as an adapted buggy, and for the community to be able to pay for this takes the pressure off the family.”
Yesterday’s walk was also supported by local businesses who donated marquees, raffle prizes, items for sale, as well as Wester Hardmuir Fruit Farm, who allowed it to take place on their land.
It means that every penny raised will go to the appeal – visit www.facebook.com/marthasfund to make a donation.
