More than 8,000 pupils across the Highlands are enjoying a day off today after snow and ice closed nearly 100 schools.
Overnight snow is also creating difficult driving conditions across the region, with several drivers becoming stuck.
More than 700 households across Shetland lost power this morning after the electricity network was struck by lightning.
The Shetland schools closed are Dunrossness, Sandwick, Cunningsburgh, Ollaberry and Fetlar.
Meanwhile, the A9 Inverness-Perth road was closed at Newtonmore after a tanker jacknifed.
An accident on the trunk road at Blair Atholl also caused a five mile tailback.
And the A82 Inverness-Glasgow road has also been badly affected, with several lorries and car getting stuck in snow.
Emergency services are also attending the scene of a collision between a car and a bus at Invergarry.
In Wester Ross the Bealach Na Ba road is closed as is the B9007 in Badenoch and Strathspey. In the Nairn area both the A939 and B9007 have been closed due to drifting snow
Nearly 13ins fell at Tulloch Bridge in Inverness-shire, according to the Met Office.
The agency still has a yellow “be aware” warnings in place for the Highlands today.
It states that the region, particularly the west coast and Western Isles, can expect gusts of up to 75mph.
Ferry operator CalMac says that many of its services will be disrupted because of the conditions.
Passengers are advised to check with the operator before travelling.
