Fraudsters have stolen hundreds of pounds from an Inverness post office with a scam in which staff are confused or tricked into handing over the cash.
Two men managed to make off with about £500 to 600 from the branch inside the Tesco Inshes store using a fraud known as “ringing the changes” on Wednesday, February 4.
This involves someone asking for a sum of cash to be changed into notes of a smaller denomination.
While doing this they deliberately confuse staff so as to obtain more money than they originally handed over.
The men requested to exchange a large sum of euros which they held in 50 euro notes for 20 euro notes.
The men subsequently changed their requests on several occasions between euros and sterling resulting in the sum of money being returned through the counter.
At the conclusion of the exchanges, the men left the store and it was discovered they had gained what police have described as “a mid three figure sum” during the transactions.
Both men are described as eastern European.
One was in his mid-30s, around 6ft tall, well built with dark hair and noticeable scarring on the left side of his face.
The second was thought to be in his mid-40s, approximately 5ft 9in, of medium build and bald.
CCTV images shows these men entering the Tesco Inshes store just after 12.30pm on Wednesday, February 4.
It is not known if they had access to a vehicle.
A police spokeswoman said: “Police appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has details of the men involved, to make contact with police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
“Police would also advise other businesses to remain vigilant to any suspicious behaviour and to report any potential attempts of fraud immediately to police on 101.”
