A rent hike caused by the cost-of-living crisis has forced an Inverness charity shop to close just four months after it opened.
The Children’s Lighthouse shop opened in the city’s Harbour Road in July.
Its goal was to sell used clothing and other items to fund an operation aimed at keeping children fed.
But increasingly challenging conditions has put a pin in the charity’s plans.
A statement from the Children’s Lighthouse said: “After these short but unforgettable couple of months, we have had to make the difficult decision to close our doors for good.
“We looked at the situation every possible way.
“But in the end, we just can’t figure out how to make ends meet in light of a drastic increase in rent and bills as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.”
‘Excruciating decision’ for Inverness charity
When it opened, the shop was being run by retail managing director Jaye Fraser and a team of six volunteers.
It enjoyed a hectic opening week and Ms Fraser described the support they had received as “unreal”.
However, like many the company has suffered in recent months.
A recent study suggested that almost four in 10 small business owners are suffering a decline in their mental health because of cost-of-living concerns.
The statement from the charity added: “It’s an excruciating decision for us.
“We love what we have managed to achieve, our loyal customers and supporters, and especially the wonderful team of people who made this community hub what it is.
“To all of you who breathed life into this place by donating, we cannot thank you enough.
“As the cost-of-living crisis deepens, we hope you’ll consider supporting your other local charities, community hubs and all our neighbourhood small businesses during this crazy time.”
Closing down sale
Messages of support have poured in for the charity on social media.
Tracey Holland said: “So so sad, Jay. You have been wonderful at supporting all that need it, in so many ways.
“A great loss to the community.”
Fiona Kharroubi added: “We always donated and bought school things from you. You will be missed.”
The shop is holding a final closing down sale.
Everything is being sold for £1.
It will close its door for the final time tomorrow at 4pm.
