Tree falls on car roof and causes damage during strong winds in Inverness

A tree has fallen on a vehicle in Inverness during strong winds, leaving the car’s roof dented.

The incident happened around 8.30am when a large tree opposite a row of houses on Hilton Avenue came down on top of a worker’s grey Volkswagen Scirocco.

The car’s owner had been at a job at a property on the street when he came out to find his car buried under the tree.

When the tree was removed, the owner found a large dent in the roof from the impact, but nothing else on the outside of the vehicle was damaged.

Highland Council deployed a team from their parks department to help clear away the tree, using a wood chipper and hand tools.

The crew used saws to cut the thick tree trunk into more manageable pieces and then use a backhoe loader to scoop up the debris.

Hilton Avenue was closed off to traffic at both ends while the work was ongoing.

The incident comes as much of the west coast of Scotland experiences high winds leading to several ferry and train cancellations.

The Met Office forecasts wind gusts up to 49mph in Inverness on Thursday evening and similar winds are expected into Friday as well.
