Six appliances are still at the scene carrying out firefighting operations. At its height last night there were eight pumps, the welfare unit, water carrier, incident command unit and all-terrain vehicle. The fire was first reported at around 12.30pm yesterday. At dawn this morning firefighters were dealing with a three mile fire-front. The operation, made harder by dry conditions and strong winds, is expected to continue for much of today. Group Manager John MacDonald, who was Incident Commander last night, said: “We are dealing with a very protracted wildfire incident which covers a wide area and where access is difficult in places. “I would like to pay tribute to the commitment and effort of fire crews who have been dealing with this incident. “I’d also like to thank local residents for their assistance and support during this incident.”
