Highland councillors will be asked to approve plans to extend one of Inverness’ busiest graveyards this week.
Kilvean Cemetery will gain hundreds of new lairs under the local authority’s proposals.
Nearly 4 acres will added to the site at Torvean in the west of the city.
Although the cemetery has capacity to cope with demand for the next 10 years, plans to redevelop land in the area has provided the chance to set land aside for the longer term.
The plans were first mooted as part of the Inverness West Link scheme, which includes a new road over the River Ness and Caledonian Canal and provision of new sport facilities at Torvean.
However the original site, at the west edge of the existing burial ground was dropped because of concerns about flooding.
The new site is between the existing graveyard and the A82 Fort William-Inverness road.
In accordance with the Burial Grounds (Scotland) Act 1855, the council must hold a special meeting to determine whether an extension should be provided.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, following the Highland Council’s full meeting.
The purchase of the land for the extension of the burial ground at Kilvean Cemetery was approved in January last year.
