Drew Hendry has confirmed his intention to step down as Highland Council leader from next Monday.
He has offered his apologies, in advance, for not attending tomorrow’s full council meeting because he is at Westminster following his dramatic win in the general election taking Liberal Democrat Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander’s Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey parliamentary seat.
The council’s chief executive Steve Barron said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Drew for his commitment and congratulate him on his achievements as leader over the past three years and to wish him all the very best in his new role.”
The council is expected to elect a new leader next month.
Deputy leader David Alston will step up for now, but tomorrow’s full council meeting in Inverness will be chaired by the authority’s vice convener Maxine Smith.
