One of the Highlands’ largest cemeteries will be extended by hundreds of new plots, or “lairs”.
Councillors have approved a four-acre extension at Kilvean on the west side of Inverness because of the area’s projected population growth.
The council estimates that the existing facility will meet demand for about a decade and its allowance for land redevelopment locally provided an opportunity to set land aside for the long term.
The extension was first mooted as part of the Inverness West Link scheme, which includes a new road over the River Ness and Caledonian Canal and provision of new sport facilities at Torvean.
The purchase of the land for the cemetery extension was approved last year.
