The ongoing norovirus outbreak at Raigmore Hospital has prompted an appeal from health bosses to ensure that members of the public visit only when absolutely necessary.
The vomiting bug is said to be rife in the community, and is thought to have been brought into the hospital by the public.
A number of hospital wards have been closed recently after patients showed symptoms of the bug.
Visiting was suspended for a short period to enable staff to contain the outbreak.
NHS Highland interim lead nurse for Raigmore Hospital Iona McGauran said: “We would like to appeal to members of the public to only visit their friends and relatives at Raigmore if it is absolutely necessary.
“However, in special circumstances, visiting can be arranged by contacting the charge nurse on the ward. This can be done via the Raigmore switchboard on 01463 704 000.
“There has been an increased incidence of diarrhoea and vomiting in the community over the last few weeks, and the traffic coming through the hospital has contributed to a number of wards having to close.
“By reducing the amount of traffic coming in to the hospital, we hope that will reduce the risk of any more outbreaks of norovirus.
“Hospital staff will of course be happy to talk to visitors over the phone so they can get updates on how their relatives are.”
