Administration buildings at Lews Castle College at Stornoway narrowly escaped a fire which destroyed a nearby storage building and plant machinery early this (TUES) morning.
The blaze broke out at about 5am and was fought for more than three hours. An investigation into the cause has now been launched.
Three appliances attended, two from Stornoway and one from Shawbost.
A total of 22 fire and rescue personnel attended.
The storage building, measuring 130ft by 32ft, was well alight when crews arrived.
Firefighters in breathing apparatus used two main jets and a ground monitor to extinguish the flames.
Crews also used a pump to draw water from a nearby stream.
Two liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cannisters were made safe by spraying with water to keep them cool.
The fire was brought under control by 8.30am.
Local fire and rescue officers will carry out an investigation to establish the cause of the blaze.
Station manager Steve Oliver said: “The fire was very close to administrative offices and other workshops and crews worked very hard to preserve as much of the building as they could.
“The roof is in an unsafe state and will require to be made safe before investigations can commence.”
