An Inverness woman’s star is rising in the design world after she won a prestigious competition in London.
Olivia Qi was named new designer of the year at a major industry event in the capital for her specialist work in knitwear on Wednesday.
It tops off an amazing week for the 24-year-old who has also graduated from The Glasgow School of Art within the past seven days.
Miss Qi was born in China and grew up in Inverness where she attended Millburn Academy before continuing her studies in Glasgow.
She is now planning to continue her studies at post-graduate level in London.
Her prize was presented as part of the annual New Designers exhibition which showcases the best work of young graduate artists working the length and breadth of the country.
Miss Qi specialises in knitting and her exhibited collection is based around the theme of transparency.
It includes a number of handcrafted garments made out of different a number of textiles.
Her collection is currently on show at the Business Design Centre and has previously been showcased at Glasgow School of Art’s annual fashion show.
She said: “I’m amazed to win. It’s brilliant for me and I’m really pleased that people like my work.”
She added: “My collection was in the study of transparency and how that can be achieved in garments.”
The awards are seen as being a major career boost for budding designers.
Jimmy Stephen-Cran, head of fashion and textiles at The Glasgow School of Art, said: “We are delighted for Olivia that she has won this prestigious award.
“Olivia was a hugely talented student and her creativity has been justly recognised in this award.
“We wish her every success as she sets out on her career as a designer.”
