A number of city centre roads are to be closed for an afternoon for a new running race in Inverness.
Athletics club Inverness Harriers have revealed plans to stage a trial 10k race along the banks of the River Ness.
They hope that the event could become an annual fixture on the city’s sporting calendar, attracting up to 3,000 people.
But this year’s trial run is set to be a far smaller occasion.
The race will be held alongside the celebrations at the Inverness Gala Day at Bught Park.
The route takes participants to the Inverness Caledonian Thistle stadium before returning to the city centre.
But club members have warned that only runners capable of completing the 6.2mile course within 90 minutes should enter the event because of the limited time that the roads can be closed.
A statement on the club’s website said: “The race is only suitable for runners who can complete the course within 90 minutes as the road closures will only be available during that period.
“Runners will be stopped if they go over the time limit.”
Highland Council issued a list of closures yesterday, ahead of the event which will start at 2pm on Sunday, July 19.
A number of streets will be closed for the full 90 minutes from 2pm, including Bught Road, Ness Walk, Ardross Terrace, Gilbert Street and Huntly Place.
Bank Street will be closed between 2pm and 2.25pm, while Douglas Row will be closed between 2pm and 2.30pm.
Riverside Street will shut for 45 minutes from 2pm, while Waterloo Place and Portland Place will both be shut to traffic between 2pm and 3.15pm.
The runners will also follow Shore Street, Cromwell Street and Stadium Road on their way to the turning point, with all of these routes reduced to a single lane between 2pm and 3.15pm.
Waterloo Bridge will also be closed between 2pm and 3.15pm.
Finally Huntly Street will be fully closed from 2.15pm until 3.30pm.
The runners will head out of town along the Bank Street side of the River Ness before returning via Huntly Street.
