Hip hop hurray! Street dance hits Inverness

They will be dancing in the streets of Inverness this weekend when the International Festival of Hip Hop Dance Theatre – Breakin’ Convention – returns to the city for its only Scottish date.

The Sadler’s Wells’ critically acclaimed international festival will feature high energy performances from local dance crews as well as UK and international companies.

The convention, which attracts participants and spectators from across the Highlands, takes place at Eden Court on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17, and will be hosted by eminent UK hip hop theatre artist, Jonzi D and co-hosted by DJ Tony Thrills.

Among those appearing are the Olivier Award-nominated ILL-Abilities, an international group changing misconceptions about disabilities, London’s Ukweli Roach, a highly skilled artist and founding member of BirdGang Dance Company, plus one of France’s leading hip hop companies, Wanted Posse.

As part of Breakin’ Convention there will be host of free pre-show hip hop extras taking place in and around the theatre including drop-in spray art and tagging workshops with graffiti artist Barry Neeson.

Visitors will also be invited to “throw down some shapes” on the open dance floor with Tony Thrills and enjoy live performances and showcases.
