Highland Council chiefs have offered a formal apology for a catalogue of failures over the construction of the Ben Wyvis Primary School.
The project, which merged Conon Bridge and Maryburgh primaries, resulted in a £862,000 overspend, a delayed opening and with a list of snagging issues including a boiler breakdown, doors falling off and flooding.
Planning director Stuart Black offered at apology at a meeting of the audit and scrutiny committee in Inverness this morning.
Committee members questioned whether lessons had been learned from what several referred to as a “disaster” in project management.
Depute chief executive Michelle Morris conceded the council does not always get it right, but “takes this very seriously” and is trying redress the issues raised in an internal audit of the troubled project.
A review of officer training has been promised along with an urgent discussion between local councillors and senior council staff.
There was high praise from councillors for staff at the school, which opened in October 2012.
