Police say a man has been arrested in the Cumbria area, and is assisting officers with their inquiry.
But officers are continuing to carry out high visibility patrols in the area to reassure the shocked community, and are also appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area in the hours leading up to the incident.
In particular, they are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a silver Volkswagen Passat earlier in the day.
The culprit is described as being 5ft 5in, of average build with dark skin. He was wearing dark clothing.
Nobody was injured in the incident, and police have confirmed the weapon was not discharged.
