Major damage has been caused to a bridge at a beauty spot on the Black Isle.
The bridge at the Fairy Glen in Rosemarkie, on the A832 road to Cromarty, appeared to have been hit by a vehicle at the weekend.
An entire section of the stonework has almost completely fallen from the road onto the path to the Fairy Glen path below, following the impact.
A wheel trim from a Ford was spotted next to the bridge.
The vehicle is believed to have hit the wall at some point on Friday night or Saturday morning.
Barriers have been put up on the path below and on the bridge, which is a single-lane crossing, although the route was not closed to traffic over the weekend.
A police spokesman was not in a position to provide any details about the incident yesterday.
Black Isle councillor Craig Fraser has contacted council bosses, police chiefs and local schools to alert them to the problem.
He said: “The bridge is extensively damaged. If somebody had been walking underneath it at the time it would have been a lot more of an issue.
“This is going to be a major repair job. When they rebuilt the bridge about four years ago it cost £300,000.
“The other thing is that when they come to repair it, there’s going to be quite a bit of disruption.
“I will be asking Highland Council for a full structural report on the damage and how much will be to repair.”
Councillor Fraser added: “I would think that at the speed the vehicle has hit the bridge may have activated the airbags. I sincerely hope no-one was injured.”
The bridge was repaired at the end of 2011 at a cost of £300,000 after being damaged by the weather.
