Three people remained in hospital last night following a car crash in the Highlands.
A woman in her 20s and a woman in her 80s were taken to Raigmore Hospital on Sunday afternoon with serious injuries after a collision on the A9 at its junction with the road to Delny Industrial Estate, north of Invergordon.
Police said yesterday that both remained in a “serious but stable” condition.
The force added that a man who was initially not thought to have been badly hurt in the collision has now been admitted to hospital.
It is understood that he requires surgery to his leg.
Police had appealed for witnesses to the accident to contact them, specifically the driver of an Audi A3 which is thought to have been in the area.
A spokesman for the force said yesterday that they had successfully traced the motorist.
The fire service confirmed that they had cut two of the casualties free, while another was already out of a vehicle when crews arrived on the scene.
The woman in her 20s was flown to Raigmore by air ambulance.
The Inverness to Thurso route was closed for several hours yesterday while specialist road policing officers carried out a full investigation.
The incident happened just before 1.30pm with the busy trunk road not opening again to traffic until about 6pm when the two cars involved had been recovered.
The vehicles involved in the collision were a blue Honda Civic, which suffered extensive damage and came to rest on a grass verge next to the road, and a dark-blue Ford Fiesta which was left in the middle of the road with damage to its front end.
Meanwhile, police in the Highlands reported two incidents on the region’s roads yesterday morning.
On the A82 Inverness to Fort William road, a car went down an embankment near Fort Augustus, with the driver treated on the scene by paramedics.
At Kiltarlity, police received a report of a car going off the road at about 5.44am. The vehicle was not badly damaged and there were no serious injuries to the driver.
