Emergency services, including coastguard helicopter, police, ambulance and the North Kessock Lifeboat search the River Ness after Marek Michalak fell

Police have resumed their search for a Polish man who has been missing since he fell into the River Ness a month ago.

The force’s helicopter was drafted in yesterday to join officers and dogs in the hunt for Marek Michalak.

The Pole fell into the river from the Greig Street bridge in Inverness on January 31.

A full emergency response was mounted on the night, but no-one has ever been recovered from the river.

The Press and Journal previously revealed that Mr Michalak’s friend Kamil Luczak had been with him on the night.

He reported having grabbed onto his compatriot’s hand as he tried in vain to stop him from falling into the water.

Mr Luczak was arrested in relation to separate issues just days after the incident and was transferred to the Colnbrook immigration removal centre in London awaiting deportation to Poland.

Last week, he revealed that he had been suffering from insomnia since witnessing Mr Michalak being swept away, and has appealed against the decision to kick him out of the country.

It is understood that the police are still trying to contact Mr Michalak’s family in Poland.

The force issued a fresh appeal for information on the incident yesterday.

“Police and partners are continuing to search for a Polish man, who entered the River Ness from the Greig Street bridge on Sunday, January 31, 2016,” a spokesman said.

“Shoreline searches of the River Ness and inner Moray Firth area are being conducted today on foot by officers and police dogs, with assistance from the Police Scotland helicopter.

“Police are renewing the appeal for anyone who saw two men near the Greig Street Bridge between 5pm and 6pm on Sunday January 31 to make contact on 101.”

The search is expected to continue today.

Last week, Mr Luczak spoke publicly about the incident for the first time.

He said: “I really wanted to help Marek but I couldn’t. Everything happened so fast, both the accident and then my detention.”

He added: “I have not been seen by a doctor since my detention. My appointment has been cancelled four times. I suffer from insomnia.”
