An Inverness councillor has condemned vandalism to property at the Highland capital’s newest university.
Vandals managed to elude the attention of CCTV cameras in the grounds of the new Inverness College UHI campus and sprayed graffiti on several seats and fence posts.
It is thought their actions were carried out at some point over the Easter weekend.
Students are now on their Easter holidays for two weeks and only administrative staff are working at the building.
Kingdom Security has secured the contract for the campus, which opened to students in September last year.
Yesterday, a source told The Press and Journal that the company has 24-hour monitored CCTV cameras on site. But the culprits were still able to bypass the system.
Police said yesterday they had received no reports about the graffiti at the campus.
Blue and green shapes have been sprayed on two stone seats and several fence posts on one of the walkways have been marked with pink lines.
The damage was spotted yesterday morning by a walker in the area.
Inverness South councillor Ken Gowans, who works at the college, said he understood that some of the CCTV cameras didn’t cover all parts of the site.
He added: “I am very disappointed by this news, because it is a brand new campus and it is the envy of many cities around Scotland.
“I would have hoped that those who did this, people who will be of an age that they might be thinking about going to the College, would value it a bit more.”
Kingdom Security were unavailable for comment yesterday due to the bank holiday.
However, a security staff member on patrol at the site said that the company would investigate the issue once they returned to work.
Inverness College UHI was also unavailable for comment.
