Police have named the northern fisherman at the centre of a major search operation after he was reported overboard.
Craig Reid, 25, was lost off the Apollo about 20 miles north-west of Kirkwall on Monday.
A major search was mounted in the waters around Orkney involving two coastguard helicopters and international military jets diverted from the Exercise Joint Warrior war games taking place in the north but the search teams were unable to find Mr Reid.
Last night, the coastguard said the search was “completed” after talking to the crew of the Inverness-registered Apollo.
Detective Inspector Scott MacDonald said: ‘I would like to thank all those who have assisted in the search efforts so far. Sadly, Mr Reid has not been found.
“My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
Police confirmed that a joint probe into the incident would be carried out, along with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.
