An Inverness man in his nineties has fallen victim to bogus workmen who conned him out of “thousands of pounds” for maintenance work that they never finished.
Police said that the pensioner was cold-called by fraudsters on Tuesday at his home in the Fairfield Road area, where they offered to carry out minor maintenance work, including the cleaning of gutters.
During the conversation the men offered to carry out further work at a vastly inflated price.
Detective Inspector Mark Czerniakiewicz said: “It appears they took advantage of the man’s vulnerability and got away with thousands of pounds, leaving the area without completing the works.
“The men were using a large red van and were in the area around 9am-10am. They are described as in their 20s and 30s with Scottish accents.
“If you know who these men are please get in touch on 101 and ask for Burnett Road CID.
“I want to identify these men as quickly as possible as this increases the chances of recovering the victim’s money.
“I also want to prevent anybody else being conned in this manner. Householders should take care when entering into a contract with workmen. Be clear about the works to be carried out and the amount of money you’ll be required to pay. Please consider discussing this advice with elderly relatives so they understand the potential pitfalls involved.”
Anyone experiencing issues with any company should contact Highland Council’s trading standards department, and anyone who feels they have been subject to crime should call police on 101.
