The family of Inverness judo star Stephanie Inglis said yesterday they had been given “good news and bad news” by doctors treating her brain injury in Vietnam.
In a statement posted on a social media page set-up on behalf of the family of the Commonwealth Games medallist, they said that her brain swelling had started to reduce and her chances of recovery had improved.
However, they added that the 27-year-old had developed a lung infection that had now progressed to pneumonia, and that her body was rejecting the antibiotics.
Ms Inglis has been in hospital in Vietnam since suffering head injuries in a freak motorbike accident two weeks ago while on her way to teach English to disadvantaged youngsters.
A fundraising page set-up to help pay for her medical bills was close to reaching £222,000 last night.
The statement said: “This has been a very difficult day for everyone. To get her over one hurdle just to meet another one is very challenging for her family.
“But please know that all the medication, treatments and specialists we can bring are due to each and every individual who has donated in some way small or large to this appeal.
“But please keep sharing, it may seem as though we are almost there and the effort to get to this point is incredible, but please don’t stop, Stephanie is not out of the woods yet.”
