Former First Minister Lord McConnell has warned that the world will become “more dangerous” if the UK votes for Brexit next week.
The Labour peer, who was first minister from 2001 to 2007, intervened in the battle over the country’s EU membership while on a visit to Inverness yesterday.
Speaking to the Press and Journal after the latest polls showed Britain on the brink of quitting the union, Lord McConnell said: “I’ve always felt that it would be a close thing.
“I think we’re in very dangerous times. I think the European Union is a force for good in the world and if it is destabilised by Britain leaving, the world will become a more dangerous and less secure place.
“I think people should think very carefully about how they are voting next week.
“It’s about each of our individual lives, but it’s also about a bigger picture.”
