The island of Tiree lived up to its reputation as “The Hawaii of the North” with sun-soaked celebrations and electric performances from some of the best acts on the Scottish folk, indie and pop scene at the weekend.
The 10th Tiree Music Festival attracted a capacity crowd of 2,100 – three times its population and a significant upgrade on the 600 who attended the inaugural event a decade ago.
Daniel Gillespie, artistic director, said: “This year was a huge milestone for the festival as we celebrated our 10th year putting on this special party on the Isle of Tiree.
“The sun was shining down on us as we marked our birthday in style, and we’re proud of the friendly, community vibe that you can always feel at it.
“We’ve had some fantastic performances and impromptu ceilidhs, as well as wonderful workshops and musical sessions for kids, with everyone getting involved.
“It’s been the best one yet and it has been great to see the crowds enjoying the best folk and pop acts on today’s scene.”
Buddha And The Band got the celebrations under way on Friday afternoon to a thrilled crowd – which had already enjoyed the first ever Thursday night opening party with performances from young Argyll folk band Rhuvaal and favourites Jam Sandwich.
Friday at The Big Top featured knock-out performances from the trad-rock outfit Manran and Tiree band Trail West, who made it a full sweep of getting crowds jumping at every festival since it began.
Some of Scotland’s best young talent graced the festival stage, including singer-songwriter Callum Beattie – who wowed crowds with a memorable headline set before swapping Tiree for London to support Robbie Williams at Hyde Park.
Sandi Thom, Face The West and Tidelines all took to The Big Top on Saturday, while the final day involved a unique collaboration as Scottish folk artists paid tribute to Bruce Springsteen.
Niteworks performed their unique fusion of electronica and Scottish traditional music to an energetic crowd before Skerryvore brought the celebrations to a spectacular close last night.
Artists across the years have included The Fratellis, Dougie MacLean, Sharon Shannon, The Levellers, Capercaillie, Sandi Thom and Eddi Reader.
