Stromness is set to get a bigger Co-op food store after the group agreed plans with Orkney Islands Council.
The project will see the Co-operative Group’s existing small convenience store on North End Road moved to a new larger unit on the former Mart site at Ferry Road.
Existing staff will transfer to the new store, and it is expected that an additional 10 – 15 jobs will be created.
Work is expected to begin on the new store on 16 June which is due to open in late November.
The new shop will be around 4,000 sq ft and will offer shoppers a wider selection of fresh and chilled products, ready meals, and in-store bakery and an extended wine range, including chilled Champagne. It will have 33 car parking spaces and an ATM.
Ian Mason, Co-operative Food Regional Acquisitions Manager for the Co-op, said: “A new larger store on Ferry Road will allow us to provide an even better service for our customers. The location is ideal for us, and we are very confident the new store will be an asset to Stromness.”
Local Councillor James Stockan said: “It has been a long standing ambition of Orkney Islands Council to see redevelopment of this site. It is encouraging that a new store will be developed, providing modern facilities for Stromness and the West Mainland.”
