Coastguard teams encountered treacherous conditions this morning as they searched for a man reported missing overboard a fishing vessel.
The Stromness lifeboat was called out at 8.10am this morning by the Coastguard to go to the assistance of the fishing vessel Apollo which had lost a man overboard 30 miles northwest of Orkney.
The lifeboat set off from Stromness Harbour and encountered heavy breaking seas in Hoy Sound, battling against westerly force seven to eight winds, as shown in the video above.
The lifeboat was stood down by the coastguard at 9am but the fishing boat and the Coastguard helicopter continue the search.
UK Coastguard Commander Tris Newey said: ‘Our helicopters, along with the fishing vessel, have been searching throughout the morning in very rough weather and challenging conditions, but so far the missing man has not been located.
“The search is continuing.”
