The fight to save Kinloss Barracks could be taken to the streets in the same way as the successful campaign to retain RAF Lossiemouth.
An estimated 7,000 people marched through the port six years ago as part of a crusade to persuade defence chiefs to keep the airbase open.
Just a month later, the UK Government announced Lossiemouth had been spared the axe.
Moray Council’s SNP group leader Gary Coull believes immediate action is needed to make a similar case to retain Kinloss Barracks.
Councillor Coull said: “We have led the calls for a task force-style meeting, similar to the one that met during the RAF Lossiemouth campaign.
“While a campaign to protect the role of Kinloss Barracks will be much shorter, a matter of weeks rather than months, the social and economic issues it raises are very similar to the Lossiemouth campaign.
“We were promised an Army presence at Kinloss when its closure as an RAF base was announced only a few short years ago – it is vital that the promise of an Army presence in Kinloss does not go the same way.
“Getting clarity from the MoD will be one of the main aims in the coming days and weeks.”
